Role Overview

Social Workers in Surrey work in partnership with families, aiming to build on their strengths and support meaningful change. Motivational interviewing is central to our practice model. Our focus is always on keeping children safe and, where possible, at home with their families.

These may vary depending on your team, but common duties include:

  • Triaging new contacts and assessing whether they require statutory support.

  • Conducting strengths-based assessments with families and networks.

  • Creating SMART plans and regularly reviewing them.

  • Coordinating with professionals at multi-agency meetings.

  • Managing court work, including Legal Planning Meetings and PLO processes.

  • Advocating for children and ensuring their voices are heard.

  • Contributing to positive outcomes through purposeful, high-quality social work.

  • Understand signs of abuse and neglect; know when to escalate concerns.

  • Use motivational practice to engage families in making changes.

  • Liaise with adult services when required.

  • Share safeguarding knowledge and support colleagues with reflective supervision.

  • Carry out strengths-based family assessments.

  • Prioritise permanence for children in care.

  • Ensure that plans address all aspects of children’s lives – education, health, and contact.

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.

To work in these roles, you’ll need:

  • A recognised Social Work qualification and Social Work England registration.

  • Current knowledge of policy, law, and guidance.

  • Strong communication, documentation and IT skills.

  • Confidence in emotionally complex conversations.

  • Ability to work across services and flexibly when needed.
